When is the best time to buy niche fragrance in the UK?

Niche fragrance is discounted less often than designer. Where the real savings come from, and how to time a niche purchase without overpaying.

Niche houses such as Creed, Parfums de Marly, Maison Francis Kurkdjian and Xerjoff behave differently from designer brands. Their prices move less often, and the savings are smaller and harder to spot. Here's how to buy well anyway.

Why niche is discounted less

Where the savings actually come from

Price differences between retailers. The same bottle can cost noticeably different amounts at different authorised UK shops on the same day. This is often the biggest saving available, and it doesn't depend on a sale.

Big sale events, sometimes. Black Friday and the January sales occasionally include niche lines at some retailers. It's not guaranteed, so don't assume a niche bottle will be cheaper in November. See when fragrances go on sale.

Bigger bottles. Larger sizes are usually cheaper per ml. If you already know you love a scent, the bigger bottle is often the better buy.

Gifts and points instead of discounts. Niche promotions are more often a gift with purchase or extra loyalty points than a lower price. Value these only at what they're worth to you.

Watch for "sales" that aren't

List prices change, usually upwards. A "sale" price can simply be what the bottle cost last year. A price history chart shows whether today's price is genuinely low or just ordinary. Read how to tell if a deal is real.

A simple plan

  1. Choose the size and concentration you want, so you compare like for like.
  2. Check the price at every retailer, not just one.
  3. Look at the history. If today's price is near the bottom of the chart, it's a good time.
  4. Set a target and wait if you're not in a hurry. Niche drops are rarer, so when one comes it's worth acting on.

One warning

Niche fragrance is a favourite target for counterfeiters. A niche bottle far cheaper than every authorised retailer is a red flag, not a bargain. See how to avoid fake fragrances.
