Grey-market fragrance: what it is and the risks
What grey-market perfume is, why it can be cheaper, and what you give up when you buy outside a brand's authorised UK retailers.
"Grey market" describes genuine fragrance sold outside the channels a brand has authorised. It isn't counterfeit, but it isn't quite the same as buying from an official stockist either.
What it is
Brands sell to authorised distributors and retailers, often at different prices in different countries. Grey-market sellers buy stock elsewhere, for example abroad or from surplus stock, and resell it. The bottle can be genuine. What's different is the route it took to reach you.
Why it's cheaper
Price differences between countries, clearance stock and lower overheads all play a part. A seller with no showroom or brand agreement can often undercut authorised retailers.
The risks
Age and storage. Fragrance is affected by heat and light. You usually can't know how long a grey-market bottle has been in transit or storage, or how it was kept.
Different versions. Stock meant for another market can have different packaging, labelling in another language, or come from an older batch. See what batch codes tell you.
Overseas sellers. If the seller is outside the UK, you may pay import VAT or other charges on delivery, wait longer, and find returns harder. Your rights under UK consumer law are clearest when you buy from a UK trader.
Harder to spot fakes. Grey-market listings and counterfeit listings often look alike. A missing or scratched-off batch code is a warning sign.
No brand support. If something's wrong, the brand may not help with a bottle it didn't sell through its own channels.
How to recognise it
- The price is well below every authorised UK retailer.
- The listing says "imported", "international version" or similar.
- Ships from abroad, or gives no UK returns address.
- The box is printed in another language.
The Ledger's approach
The Ledger only tracks retailers that supply official product feeds through recognised affiliate networks, and doesn't list grey-market sellers. If a genuine UK retailer drops its price, that's what we'll show you. For more on judging a price, read how to tell if a fragrance deal is real.
